Animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way.

Urge the Australian Government to Mandate an End to All Experiments on Animals

It's time for Australia to replace all experiments on animals.

Politicians and other decision-makers must recognise how much time, how much money, and how many lives are wasted in the current research paradigm:

  • Over 95% of new drugs fail in human trials, even though they've already proved safe and effective in experiments on animals.
  • Over 90% of highly promising basic scientific discoveries, most of which involve animal experimentation, fail to enter routine clinical use within 20 years.
  • Between 50% and 89% of preclinical research isn't reproducible, with animal experimentation implicated as a significant factor.
  • The differences among species are so vast that results in animals are, at best, a very poor approximation of what will happen in humans or, at worst, dangerously misleading.

We need to shift away from all experiments using animals. It's time for the Research Modernisation Deal!

PETA UK has developed the Research Modernisation Deal, which maps out a strategy for replacing the use of animals in biomedical research and regulatory testing. And we're urging the Australian government and national research funding bodies to implement a policy to do just that. With greater investment in animal-free methods, scientists in Australia would be able to develop better treatments for human diseases as well as more reliable methods for toxicity assessment.

Finally – and crucially – this transition would help end the almost unimaginable suffering of millions of mice, rats, dogs, primates, rabbits, fish, and other animals.

Please sign our petition urging the government and national research councils to implement a policy that mandates an end to animal experimentation and provides a clear strategy and timeline for achieving this goal.

Commit to Ending All Experiments on Animals

To: Department of Health; Department of Education, Skills and Employment; Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources; National Health and Medical Research Council; and Australian Research Council

I'm writing to ask that you stop funding experiments that squander dollars on ineffective and antiquated animal experimentation and instead commit to ending experiments on animals altogether. Please implement a policy for funding only modern, human-relevant research methods and provide a clear strategy and timeline for achieving this goal. Human clinical and epidemiological studies, human tissue- and cell-based research methods, cadavers, sophisticated high-fidelity human-patient simulators, and computational models offer more reliable, more precise, less expensive, and more humane alternatives to experiments on animals.

Thank you for helping to achieve a better future for animals and human health.

Yours sincerely,
